BUSINESS LUNCH: Donnelly Hospitality Management founder-principal Jeff Donnelly, 34, ordered cheddar scramble and yam fries while greeting Gastown habitues from his 270-seat Lamplighter pub’s Abbott Street patio. He looked zestier than the platter, having returned from his first four-week vacation in eight years since acquiring nine Vancouver pubs and clubs. VANCOUVER — NBA stars. A World Cup winner. An urban field. And a sweet eight-a-side game of footie in Vancouver’s downtown core benefiting children’s programs on three continents.

That’s right, the Steve Nash Foundation’s Showdown in Downtown goes Saturday, 3 p.m, at David Lam Park. And what better way to learn more about the free event than the man himself?

We talked to the two-time NBA MVP about the Showdown and got the lowdown  on Nash’s busy week, which also includes receiving an honorary degree from the University of Victoria on Friday.

Q: Who do you have coming into town for Saturday’s game?

A: Thus far, the confirmed guys are Baron Davis (L.A. Clippers), Hasheem Thabeet (Memphis Grizzlies), Jouri Djorkaeff and myself. I don’t know if you’re familiar with Jouri, but he’s a fantastic soccer player who won the World Cup for France, won the European Cup for France, was a star with Inter-Milan, Monaco, Bolton — he’s won it all.

Q: You’ve done similar events like this in New York in the past. What’s the attraction?

A: It’s an interesting format, for one, and for two, the fans are right there on top of you. It’s not like in an arena or stadium. Ninety-nine per cent of people never get to be this close or see something in this type of setting, so it’s just a unique event for the fans. We’ll have a few former and current Whitecaps, the NBA guys, Jouri and myself against the Whitecaps’ residency team. I can’t wait, it’s going to be a lot of fun.

Q: You’ve got such a hectic schedule — training with the residency lads on Thursday at Brockton Oval, receiving your honorary degree from UVic on Friday and, of course, the game and the after party at Pop Opera on Saturday — how do you manage it all along with your family commitments?…
