8 Bit Fashion

Here’s something a little different to look at – 8 bit fashion. I came across these graphic illustrations on Fashionary (Side Note: If you’re in fashion design, you need to order one of these sketchbooks ASAP. They ship from Hong Kong and ship to anywhere in the world for free).

Inspired by the retro 8-bit graphic, Fashionary used the pixels to create couture fashion illustrations from their favourite high-end fashion designers. I geeked out when I saw them, so I had to share. You can view all of them here.

On Nov 23rd we had A Tribe Called Quest’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad down to the Red Bull lounge for a screening of the Tribe documentary Beats, Rhymes & Life followed by a Q&A with Ali. While the heads in attendance were enjoying Heini’s and Redbull/vodkas (Ali had the fruit punch), Flipout hosted the Q&A and everything Tribe was covered.

There was just too much info and knowledge dropped to write a quick review, so either hit the player above to stream the audio or the link below to download the Q&A session. It’s Movember, the month formerly known as November, which is dedicated to growing moustaches and raising awareness and funds for men’s health. I have joined the movement and will be donating my upper lip to the cause for 30 days. My Mo will spark conversations, and no doubt generate some laughs; all in the name of raising vital awareness and funds for prostate cancer.

Why am I so passionate about men’s health?

*On average men live 4-5 years less than women

*1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime

* 25,500 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year in Canada

International Stout Day

Today was International stout day and boy did I ever miss the boat. I found out about halfway through the day thanks to a very appropriate tweet from good old @ninamendoza. This posed a few problems for me: First, I was fairly hungover. Granted, my hangover was probably one of the more mild ones I have experienced in the 2nd half of 2011 but still. Second, I was trapped in meetings for most of the day and they sadly weren’t the kind where you enjoy a pint. Third, I was far away from the stout I longed to drink on this most glorious of days: North Coast Brewing’s Old Rasputin.

Why does Smiley’s Public House feel so far away from my office? A short walk would have got me there, but this just wasn’t gonna happen.

Here’s the deal: I officially owe all the stouts out there that I didn’t drink an apology. I really let you down. Even though I can’t make it up to you what I can do is attempt to celebrate in a different way. So on just over three weeks, on November 29th we’ll be tapping a cask of Mission Springs Espresso Stout at New Oxford Public House. This one won’t last long, so please get there early to avoid the disappointment. Cask gets tapped at 5:30pm and CAMRA members receive 20% off all food purchases.

If you aren’t up on SonReal then you need to get out from under the rock that you’ve been hiding. Dude has been packing clubs and blowing up speakers for the past couple years. He sings, raps, produces and has gotten himself to this stage of his career keeping things strictly independent. This shit is Hip-Hop at its finest. Oh, did I mention he is Vancouver’s own?! That’s right.
